Leipzig started brightly and had an early chance in the second minute when Amadou Haidara won the ball high up the pitch and squared it for Xavi Simons.
However, the Dutch international’s first-time effort flew over the bar.
Moments later, Leipzig came close again through Benjamin Sesko, whose header was comfortably saved by Kelleher.

Liverpool, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counter-attack, with Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz creating chances to double their lead.
In the 70th minute, Alexis Mac Allister came agonisingly close to scoring when his curling shot from 20 yards out rattled the crossbar.
