A European city loved by Brits for city breaks has been rocked by two nights of carnage with riot officers deployed after violence broke out following the police shooting of a father-of-two.

Odair Moniz died in the early hours of Monday, October 23 after he was allegedly killed by Portuguese police in a suburb on the outskirts of the capital Lisbon.

After the incident news footage shows police with shields being pelted with missiles and vehicles, including public transport, being set alight by demonstrators.

According to local newspaper Espresso, a police source said the unrest has spread to several areas of Lisbon, namely Carnaxide, Sintra, and Damaia.

It’s reported Mr Moniz was shot three times by officers in the early hours of Monday, in the Cova da Moura neighbourhood and died shortly afterwards at the São Francisco Xavier Hospital, in Lisbon.

According to the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) Mr Moniz, 43, had fled from the police and, after being approached, resisted arrest and tried to attack the officers with a bladed weapon before he was gunned down.

TV channel SIC Noticias reports 30 people were involved in disturbances in the Zambujal neighbourhood where Mr Moniz was killed and there have been several arrests.

Video posted on X shows squads of riot police huddled together as they are attacked with projectiles as they try and quell the rioting.

Local media reports the civil rights organisations of SOS Racismo and Vida Justa have disputed the version of events given by police in Mr Moniz’s death.

The groups have demanded a “serious and impartial” investigation to determine “all responsibilities” and accused the police of having a “culture of impunity”.

Vida Justa claim Mr Moniz was unarmed.

After the violence the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Affairs ordered the General Inspectorate of Internal Affairs ordered an urgent investigation to be held into circumstances surrounding the shooting.
