Sari Multala, Finland’s Minister of Science and Culture, recently visited Imperial College to emphasize the expanding research partnerships between the UK and Finland.
Accompanying her was Jukka Siukosaari, the Finnish Ambassador to the UK.
Welcoming them were Professor Ian Walmsley CBE, Provost of Imperial, alongside Professor Arttu Rajantie from the Department of Physics and Chair of the Finnish Science Society. Together they briefed the minister and her team on various initiatives at the university.
The Minister toured the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein, where she engaged with both researchers and students about their collaborative projects with Finnish institutions. This initiative underscores a commitment to innovative solutions in sustainability.
Impacts of this collaboration are evident as Imperial is involved in 32 joint Horizon Europe projects with Finnish partners.
Strengthening Ties Between Finland and Imperial
There exists a robust connection between Imperial College London and its Finnish counterparts, highlighted by a vibrant community that includes over 40 staff members and students from Finland.
The university’s involvement encompasses 32 ongoing collaborations under Horizon Europe with Finland-related institutions.
The research covered under these projects spans crucial areas including responses to COVID-19, sourcing sustainable raw materials efficiently, advancing climate science models, exploring yeast-based innovations in sustainable aviation fuel development, along with breakthroughs in energy storage technologies.
Additively, cooperation extends to VTT Technical Research Centre from Finland among other stakeholders aimed at establishing global biofoundry standards. This effort receives crucial backing via funding from the US National Science Foundation Global Centers program.
