Germany has joined Europe’s ultra-low fertility countries as the total fertility rate of 1.4 collapsed.
On the 24th local time, the British daily Financial Times (FT) reported that Germany’s total fertility rate fell to 1.35 last year, citing the German Statistical Office.
This is lower than the total fertility rate of 1.46 in 2022 and below the U.N.-set ultra-low fertility standard of 1.4.
The total fertility rate refers to the number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime.Estonia and Austria also recorded 1.31 and 1.32 total fertility rates last year, respectively, making them the EU’s lowest-birthrate countries.
There were nine countries in the EU, including Malta, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Luxembourg, Greece, Finland, and Cyprus, but Germany, Estonia, and Austria were added this time, increasing the number to 12.
The Financial Times noted that birth rates have also fallen in countries like Sweden and France that have seen the effects of increasing birthrates through family-friendly policies and gender equality.
France had the highest total fertility rate among EU countries in 2022, at 1.79, but last year it fell to a record low of 1.67 since the country’s 1776 statistics tally.
The reasons for the overall decline in the fertility rate are increasing births in their 30s, delays in achieving goals such as home purchases, and political and economic uncertainty.
