Severe Weather Causes Flooding Disruptions Across the UK
LONDON (AP) — The United Kingdom faced significant flooding on Wednesday as relentless rain and strong winds interfered with New Year’s festivities.
In the Manchester area, multiple communities dealt with rising waters, leading to evacuations from homes and submerged vehicles that were left nearly entirely underwater in roads and parking lots, following a deluge equivalent to nearly a month’s rainfall condensed into just two days.
Emergency Response Initiated
A major emergency was declared as mountain rescue teams assisted firefighters responding to inundated properties and trapped cars, according to Greater Manchester Police.
Tom Morgan, a meteorologist with the Met Office, warned that “additional flooding is likely throughout the day,” suggesting conditions may deteriorate before improving. “We are potentially expecting the flood situation to get worse before it gets better,” he stated.
The Impact of Continued Rainfall
The downpour began late Tuesday afternoon and continued relentlessly overnight in Didsbury—a neighborhood located south of Manchester. This resulted in overflowing riverbanks which necessitated evacuating a local hotel before dawn. The inclement weather forced numerous roads and highways to close.
Cancellations Affecting New Year Celebrations
This widespread deluge not only caused flooding but also disrupted planned New Year’s Eve fireworks displays across several cities including Edinburgh. Consequently, many events slated for New Year’s Day—such as traditional cold-water swims or unique bathtub races—were canceled due to safety concerns.
Despite these challenges, London was still able to host its iconic fireworks show along the River Thames near Big Ben. However, due to adverse weather conditions on New Year’s Day itself, they had no choice but to delay their parade’s kickoff while inflatable floats remained grounded amid high winds and rain showers.
Widespread Weather Warnings Issued
Flood warnings were issued for over 150 communities at one point across the UK—a majority situated in northern England—with many alerts later being rescinded during the day as conditions stabilized somewhat. Transportation services also felt disruptions; numerous train schedules were canceled due partly to flooded tracks while several highways faced closures.
The forecast shows temperatures dropping significantly; ice warnings have been issued through Thursday morning for regions in Northern Ireland alongside parts of North Wales as well as England and Scotland. Moreover, predictions include snowfall over much of England and Scotland throughout an upcoming three-day period this weekend.
