Kunduz, Afghanistan, October 10, 2021. Hoshang Hashimi / AFP The Islamic State Organization (IS) claimed, Wednesday, February 12, the suicide attack which left five dead, the day before, before a bank in the provincial capital de Kunduz, in northern Afghanistan. The propaganda body of the jihadist group reported that a “suicide bomber” “detonated his explosive vest” in the midst of “members of the Taliban militia gathered before a public bank to recover their salary”. On Tuesday, Kunduz police reported that a suicide attack in front of a bank killed five people, including civilians and civil servants, and injured seven others. IS had already used this Modus Operandi in March 2024 in Kandahar, in the south of the country, the historic stronghold of the Taliban. Early in the morning, one of his suicide bombers blew himself up in the middle of a civil servant tail awaiting their salary in front of a bank. The authorities had officially identified three dead while a hospital source mentioned 20 killed. In December, the Minister of Refugees, Khalil Rahman Haqqani, had been killed in his ministry in Kabul in a suicide attack claimed by IS. Back attacks still occur through Afghanistan despite regular statements by the Taliban authorities assuring that the jihadist threat has been eradicated. The number of bomb attacks and suicide bombings in Afghanistan has however considerably decreased since the return to power of the Taliban, in August 2021.
