Russian film critic Yekaterina Barabash has reportedly escaped from house arrest and missed her court appearance regarding accusations of disseminating “deliberately false information” about the Russian military, as stated by state media on Monday, citing anonymous sources informed about the case.

At 64 years old, Barabash was placed under house arrest in February due to social media posts in which she was accused of spreading “false information” concerning the Russian Armed Forces.

The Moscow division of the Federal Penitentiary Service found on April 13 that Barabash had breached the conditions of her house arrest, according to the state-run news agency RIA Novosti.

Following this, authorities issued an arrest warrant, as reported by RIA Novosti and TASS on Monday.

Exiled media outlet Meduza pointed out that her name is currently absent from the Interior Ministry’s wanted persons list. Additionally, RBC news agency noted that criminal proceedings against Barabash have been stalled for unclear reasons.

On Monday, a court in Moscow ordered Barabash’s pre-trial detention in her absence. She did not appear for the hearing, and her attorney, Mikhail Biryukov, refused to provide comments, as reported by RBC.

An outspoken opponent of Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine, Barabash stated in March 2022 that Russia had “bombed the country” and “destroyed entire cities.”
