A former professional football player has been brought before the court, facing charges of assault against Keisha Buchanan, a member of the Sugababes, as well as exercising control over her personal activities such as showering, wearing lipstick, and visiting the gym.
Taiwo Leo Atieno, 39, is confronted with eight charges related to his former partner, Ms. Buchanan, spanning an approximate period of 13 years.
The ex-Luton Town and Kenya national team athlete appeared via video link, dressed in a suit and tie.
He has been granted conditional bail and is expected to enter his pleas in August.
Residing in Brixton, south London, Mr. Atieno is accused of assaulting Ms. Buchanan, one of the founding members of the Sugababes, between 2012 and 2015, resulting in physical harm.
Additionally, he faces charges of controlling or coercive behavior in relation to her.
It’s alleged that he intercepted Ms. Buchanan’s mail, prohibited her from wearing red lipstick, and managed her financial resources, as well as dictated her schedule for going to the gym or taking showers.
During the proceedings at Harrow Crown Court (conducted at Southwark), the judge instructed him not to contact Ms. Buchanan, to refrain from entering the district of Barnet, and to surrender his passport.
Ms. Buchanan was just a teenager when she became one of the original members of the Sugababes alongside Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy in 1998.
