LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The federal authorities is cracking down to forestall fraud after 8 Information Now reported the School of Southern Nevada was the sufferer of a multimillion-dollar hack.
CSN misplaced $7.4 million in what’s known as a “Ghost Student” rip-off.
“We were attacked, much like a lot of colleges across the nation have been attacked. Hence the feds taking action,” Dr. Juan Avalos, CSN’s vp of pupil affairs, mentioned.
In a press launch issued on Friday, Secretary of Schooling Linda McMahon mentioned rampant fraud is “ripping off taxpayers” and taking monetary help away from college students. In consequence, she was implementing an additional layer of safety to confirm FAFSA purposes.

“This is more about scammers than it is about people, and people not doing their jobs. I want to make that part clear,” Dr. Avalos mentioned.
From October to December 2023, the neighborhood school was getting a lot of federal monetary help purposes, in response to CSN.
However on the primary day of the spring semester in 2024, CSN observed an issue — empty school rooms.
“It became a level of crisis during spring of 2024, when our instructors were reporting full rosters but no one was showing up,” Avalos mentioned.
The fraud scheme led to CSN paying again the U.S. Division of Schooling for loans the school awarded to faux college students.
