Grid congestion—an “overloaded” electrical energy grid—leads to delays to constructing tasks and sustainable initiatives. Nevertheless, analysis by power scientist Nico Brinkel has discovered that “smart charging” of electrical automobiles presents a possible solution to take care of the issue. “But then grid operators and car manufacturers should put their shoulders to the wheel.” Brinkel will defend his dissertation at Utrecht College on 5 September 2025.
Most electrical automobiles are plugged into their charging station across the identical time day by day, when their drivers arrive residence from work within the early night. “That’s one of the peak load moments for the power grid,” explains Brinkel. “The demand for electricity then exceeds what the grid can supply, potentially resulting in power outages.”
For that reason, Brinkel studied choices for delaying charging till there may be extra capability out there on the electrical energy grid.
Grid tariff system
Brinkel’s analysis exhibits that there are a number of methods for grid operators to encourage the adoption of good charging. “It’s a better—and cheaper—solution than reinforcing the grid. We may still have to do that eventually, but smart charging could give grid operators some valuable time.”
