A segment of the Thames Path that collapsed near Kew Gardens in west London last year is set to reopen after repair work that faced delays.
Since its collapse in October due to high winds and elevated river levels, the stretch of this walking and cycling route between Richmond Lock and Kew Gardens has been inaccessible to the public.
While repairs were initially expected to be finished by summer, Richmond Council cited “challenging tidal and ground conditions” as the reason for the delays, necessitating additional piling and reinforcement. The path is scheduled to reopen on 8 November.
Alexander Ehmann, chair of the transport committee at Richmond Council, remarked, “This has been one of the most technically challenging repairs to the riverbank we have undertaken.”
He expressed gratitude to residents for their understanding, adding, “The brief delay allows us to deliver a safe, high-quality repair that will withstand the tides of the Thames for many years to come.”
The council emphasized that the enhancements have made the path “more robust, environmentally friendly, and enjoyable for all users.”
Additionally, crews have cleared obstructed culverts and reinforced sections of the path to protect Richmond’s riverside, ensuring it remains safe and accessible, according to Local Democracy Reporting Services.
