The Saratov region in southern Russia has become the newest federal entity to cut enlistment bonuses for soldiers signing military contracts, with one of its most populated areas reducing the payments even more, as reported by media on Wednesday.
Last week, Orenburg and Saratov joined the ranks of the fifth and sixth regions to decrease military contract bonuses from a minimum of 2 million rubles to the legal minimum of 400,000 rubles ($5,000).
This amount aligns with the minimum recommended by President Vladimir Putin for regional authorities to pay new recruits last year. The federal government typically matches these payments.
Other areas, including Belgorod, Samara, the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region, and Bashkortostan, had already lowered military contract bonuses to at least 1 million rubles earlier this year.
A report from the media outlet 7×7 revealed that a decree from the Engels district in the Saratov region last week reduced municipal bonuses from 400,000 rubles to 150,000 rubles ($1,850) for recruits who sign contracts between November 1 and December 31.
These municipal payments are distinct from regional bonuses but are occasionally intended to supplement what soldiers receive from local or federal authorities.
While local officials had previously promoted the payment increases through media campaigns, the recent cuts have largely gone unnoticed and were only revealed following their publication on official government websites.
