Mobile internet services in St. Petersburg and its surrounding areas remained unavailable for the second day in a row, despite authorities lifting a drone-related warning on Thursday, as reported by the media on Friday.
Governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, had cautioned on Thursday that mobile internet speeds “might be affected” due to potential drone threats. He later clarified that the drones were intercepted outside the area but did not address the situation regarding mobile internet speeds.
As per the St. Petersburg news outlet Fontanka, users continued to face disruptions in mobile internet service on Friday, which impacted both work and everyday activities, making it difficult to access payment systems, delivery apps, and taxi services.
The major telecom providers in Russia stated that these service interruptions were beyond their control.
Authorities have indicated that these measures aim to prevent drone attacks.
Monitoring services reported on Thursday that mobile internet outages were reported in 59 regions across Russia.
“White lists” of permitted services were implemented in 53 regions. This list includes access to the government services portal Gosuslugi, the Russian tech giant Yandex, popular social networks Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki, online retailers Ozon and Wildberries, as well as the Mir payment system.
St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region started testing these mobile internet white lists on December 1.
