Turkey has reported that a drone, which crashed on Friday in a rural area of northwestern Turkey, is of Russian origin. This incident follows a series of events related to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The unmanned aerial vehicle was found near the city of Izmit, approximately 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of the Black Sea, according to the private news agency DHA.

An initial statement from the Interior Ministry, shared on X, indicated that the drone is thought to be an Orlan-10 model made in Russia, which is typically used for reconnaissance and surveillance.

The ministry confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway but provided no further details.

Reports from Turkish media suggested that the drone sustained damage during the crash.

This event follows an incident on Monday when Turkey intercepted a drone that had “lost control” while approaching its airspace from the Black Sea.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has cautioned against the Black Sea turning into a “zone of confrontation” between Russia and Ukraine, in light of recent attacks on vessels in the area.

Just last week, a Turkish ship was struck by a Russian airstrike near the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, shortly after Erdoğan had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a summit in Turkmenistan.
