A French bistro that has been a fixture in Covent Garden since World War II is offering its interior decor for sale prior to a renovation.
Founded in 1943 by two siblings, the restaurant was passed on to its maitre’d, Alain Lhermitte, in 1973.
Mon Plaisir is recognized as “London’s oldest family-run French dining establishment.”
Starting from December 28, a variety of the venue’s French-themed decorative pieces, such as vintage signage, art posters, clocks, and cockerel figures, will be auctioned off.
In 2017, Mr. Lhermitte transferred ownership to his family before he passed away in 2022.
Currently, Mon Plaisir is in the hands of a new family, who plan to refresh the decor while preserving the original dining room from 1943 and maintaining the iconic copper-topped bar.
Steven Stockton from Catherine Southon’s Auctioneers and Valuers remarked that the auction presents “a unique chance to own a piece of London’s culinary heritage at an affordable price”.
He continued, “Since 1943, Mon Plaisir has been a cornerstone of Covent Garden’s dining scene.”
“Every person I talk to seems to have a cherished memory related to Mon Plaisir, all shared with great affection.”
One London-based French couple mentioned their affection for the bistro because it evokes memories of home, noting the excellent food, stylish decor, and the famously blunt waitresses.
The timed auction will run from December 28 to January 11.
