On Monday, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Russia categorized George Washington University as an “undesirable” entity, accusing the institution based in the U.S. of fostering anti-Russian sentiments and disseminating misinformation regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
This classification effectively prohibits the university from maintaining any operations within Russian territory. According to Russian legislation, individuals associated with an “undesirable” entity can face sentences of up to four years in prison, while those identified as organizing its activities may confront up to six years of incarceration.
George Washington University runs a well-known Russian studies program, which Moscow’s prosecutors have claimed financially supports media outlets and individuals identified as “foreign agents.”
In their statement, authorities asserted that the program “established a media platform that compiles content produced by foreign agents and undesirable organizations related to the socio-political landscape of Russia… and urges Washington’s officials to impose increased sanctions.”
While the prosecutors did not specify the media outlet, the description seemed to allude to Russia Post, a journalistic platform affiliated with the university’s Russian studies initiative. The website for Russia Post has previously faced blocking in Russia.
