On Friday, Ukraine reported that Russia had struck two cargo ships off its southern coast in the Black Sea, resulting in the death of a Syrian crew member aboard one of the ships.

According to Restoration Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, one of the vessels was headed to the southern port of Chornomorsk to load grain, while the other was targeted near the port of Odesa while it was transporting soybeans.

Kuleba noted on Telegram, “Regrettably, this assault led to the fatality of a crew member, who was a citizen of Syria.”

He emphasized that this incident is just another instance of Russia intentionally attacking civilian infrastructure, international shipping, and food supply chains.

Ukraine has consistently accused Moscow of targeting cargo ships carrying food products to and from its ports in the Black Sea.

Last month, Ukraine attributed attacks on two Turkish cargo ferries to Russia—one was carrying sunflower oil, while the other was loaded with fresh produce and other food items.

In response to rising tensions, Turkey issued a warning last month regarding a “alarming escalation” in the Black Sea, following Ukraine’s allegations of naval drone strikes on tankers associated with Russia.

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan advocated for a “limited ceasefire” regarding attacks on ports and energy installations amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
