On Monday, Finnish authorities announced the release of a cargo ship suspected of damaging an underwater cable in the Gulf of Finland on New Year’s Eve after it sailed away from a Russian port.
The vessel, named Fitburg and flying the flag of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, had been intercepted while en route from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Haifa, Israel.
Finnish police claim that the Fitburg dragged its anchor for “at least several tens of kilometers” along the seabed before colliding with a telecommunications cable that connects Finland and Estonia.
Following the ship’s seizure, authorities detained fourteen crew members hailing from Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan for questioning. Finnish customs officials noted that the cargo aboard the Fitburg comprised steel products that are under Western sanctions.
As of 11:00 a.m. local time on Monday, the Fitburg departed from Finnish territorial waters.
The National Bureau of Investigation of Finland reported that it is continuing its inquiry into charges of “aggravated criminal damage, attempted aggravated criminal damage, and aggravated interference with telecommunications.”
The law enforcement body indicated that charges may evolve as the investigation unfolds.
On Sunday, a court in Helsinki ordered the detention of a crew member from the Fitburg pending trial, while an unspecified number of other sailors were subjected to a travel ban, as stated by lead investigator Risto Lohi.
