Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump revealed plans Sunday to shutter the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for approximately two years starting July 4, aiming to transform the venue through extensive construction and revitalization.[1][2]

Trump described the center as a “tired, broken, and dilapidated” facility that had suffered financially and structurally for years. He argued that a full closure would ensure higher-quality work and faster completion, avoiding disruptions from ongoing performances.[1]
“This important decision, based on input from many Highly Respected Experts, will take a tired, broken, and dilapidated Center… and turn it into a World Class Bastion of Arts, Music, and Entertainment,” Trump stated in his social media post.[1] The announcement coincided with preparations for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, positioning the July 4 start date as symbolically fitting.
