The quiet coastal enclave of Hermosa Beach faced a grim interruption last weekend when police discovered the body of a 92-year-old real estate developer inside his beachfront home. Authorities believe Demetrius Doukoullos had been dead for several days, with signs of trauma evident on the partially decomposed remains.[1][2] What began as a routine welfare check escalated into a tense SWAT operation involving a strangely attired suspect who barricaded inside the residence.[3]
A Routine Check Turns Alarming
Neighbors and tenants first raised concerns after noticing Doukoullos had vanished from his usual routine. The elderly resident, known for his daily presence on the porch with open blinds, had not appeared for about a week. A foul odor soon emanated from the home in the 500 block of The Strand, near 5th Street, prompting tenants to alert property management.[4][2]
On Saturday, March 14, around 12:30 p.m., the property manager requested a welfare check from Hermosa Beach police after failing to reach Doukoullos for two days. Officers arrived with the manager, who unlocked the door. Inside, they encountered a 39-year-old suspect who fled to a bedroom and barricaded the door.[5]
The individual made statements indicating they were armed and dangerous, as well as threats of self-harm. This prompted an immediate call for SWAT teams from Hermosa Beach Police Department and allied agencies, along with crisis negotiators.
