Patti Smith says in her first memoir, We We Had been Kids (2010), that studying Louisa Might Alcott’s novel Little Ladies gave her a favorable viewpoint on her destiny as a lady.
The younger teen Patricia, who gobbled the entire literature that fell into her arms, had no concept that her voracious thirst for artwork – that keenness to grasp the whole lot conceivable about literature, tune, portray and writing – would make her a reference for plenty of ladies. Or perhaps sure, as a result of deep down he harbored an unquestionable need to be an artist and trustworthy all his power to getting ready for it: “He wanted to enter the circle of artists: their hunger, their way of dressing, their creativity and their prayers.”
Now the jury of the Princess of Asturias Prize has simply awarded him an artwork prize “for his violent creativity, which combines rock, symbolist poetry and the spirit of counterculture with great expressive power.”
A poet within the punk international
On February 10, 1971, on the age of 25, accompanied through her inseparable Lenny Kay on guitar, Patti Smith gave her first poetry recital in New York. From then till these days, his ingenious energy is transmitted via his performances, his musical compositions and his literature: from poetry to essays and memoirs.
