Sparks, Nevada – Local police will soon have a new investigative tool aimed at curbing retail theft after the city council gave unanimous approval in late April. The move comes as officers respond to a steady rise in shoplifting incidents across northern Nevada stores and shopping centers. Officials say the technology will help analysts match surveillance footage from crime scenes against existing police databases, with an initial target of cutting related calls by at least 10 percent by August.
Tool Targets Retail Theft but Extends Further
The program relies on Dataworks Plus Facial Recognition software purchased through a nearly $19,000 state grant. Analysts will upload images or video from store thefts and compare them to local records in partnership with the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. While retail theft stands as the primary focus, the same system will support investigations into violent crimes, property offenses, and fraud cases.
Chief Chris Crawforth told council members the technology serves only as supporting evidence rather than the sole basis for any arrest. He stressed that officers must complete specialized training and certification before accessing the database, a safeguard not present in every neighboring agency.
