6 Actors Who Turned Down Roles That Made Other People Legends

Hollywood casting is part strategy, part gut instinct, and occasionally, pure accident. Scripts change hands dozens of times before a single frame is shot, and the actor who ends up on screen is sometimes the third, fourth, or even fifth choice for the part. Most of the time, nobody remembers the ones who said no.

Every so often, though, a rejection becomes its own kind of legend. The “no” echoes for decades because the role in question didn’t just succeed – it became inseparable from the actor who eventually said yes. Here are six of the most striking examples.

1. Will Smith Passed on Neo in The Matrix (1999)

Fresh off the success of Men in Black, Will Smith was offered the lead role in The Matrix but chose to star in Wild Wild West instead. The Wachowskis pitched him a concept so ambitious and technically complex that it simply didn’t land on paper. Smith later admitted he wasn’t mature enough as an artist to grasp the Wachowskis’ complex vision.

Keanu Reeves stepped into the role and helped turn The Matrix into one of the most influential sci-fi movies ever made. The irony is hard to ignore. Wild Wild West flopped while The Matrix revolutionized science fiction cinema, and Reeves built an entire second act of his career on the back of that one green-tinted bullet-dodge.
