A British retired couple who had been on a yacht which had warning pictures fired close to it by a Russian warship within the English Channel on Tuesday have described the “surreal” expertise to BBC Newsnight.
Jane and Alan Kelvey had been crusing 23 miles off the coast of the Isle of Wight on Tuesday morning once they got here into shut contact with a Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich.
The warship fired into the UK-registered yacht’s path, in what the Ministry of Defence has described as an “remoted incident” and never linked to the seizure of a Russian shadow fleet tanker within the Channel on Sunday.
Jane Kelvey instructed BBC Newsnight: “[The warship] gave out 5 blasts on their horn, which suggests ‘have you ever seen us?’
“We instantly turned two levels to port so they might see we had made a deliberate change in fact, which meant we had seen them.
“Then a minute or so later they gave one other 5 blasts on their horn, instantly adopted by 4 to 5 small arms hearth.
“That wasn’t geared toward us – it was warning hearth that went up within the air, we imagine.”
Jane mentioned their yacht, the Vibrant Future, was “positively not on a collision course”, including: “So far as we had been involved, it wasn’t an incident till the gunfire began.”
Alan Kelvey mentioned the gunfire had been “pointless”, and the couple mentioned a Royal Navy vessel arrived to examine on their welfare shortly afterwards.
