Strengthening Security for Ukraine: A New Coalition Initiative
Keir Starmer has proposed a collaborative approach between France and the United Kingdom to establish a “coalition of the willing,” aimed at providing security assurances to Ukraine contingent upon a potential cease-fire. In recent weeks, both nations have been actively working on a strategy to send peacekeeping forces into Ukraine once an agreement with Russia is reached.
However, progress on these discussions has stalled due to uncertainties regarding whether the administration in Washington would offer the necessary U.S. support that could dissuade Russian President Vladimir Putin from further aggression towards Ukraine.
“I’m not pointing fingers at anyone, but rather than waiting for every European nation to contribute—an approach that would inevitably slow down progress—I believe it’s time we move forward with those willing to act now,” Starmer remarked during an interview.
In his statements, Starmer acknowledged he had not yet secured any commitments from U.S. officials regarding support for troops deployed in Ukraine by European nations. He emphasized that having U.S. backing is crucial for the effectiveness of any security guarantees aimed at protecting Ukraine.
Italy’s Role in Rebuilding Diplomatic Relations
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her readiness on Sunday to facilitate stronger ties between the U.S. government and Ukraine. Upon her arrival in London, she asserted that Italy and the U.K. could significantly contribute towards “fostering relationships” between key parties involved.
