There’s a particular kind of rock and roll story that sounds too strange to be real: a band records an album, nobody hears it, the group falls apart, and then, decades later, the music resurfaces as if it had been waiting patiently the whole time. That’s roughly what happened to a trio of brothers from Detroit whose only studio album sat in a closet for over thirty years before anyone outside their family knew it existed. The tale involves a record executive, a stubborn refusal to compromise, and a son who recognized his father’s voice on an old cassette.
Three brothers, one shared obsession
Bobby, David, and Dannis Hackney grew up in Detroit in a large family headed by a Baptist preacher, and music was simply part of the household from an early age. The trio formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1971, with Bobby on bass and vocals, David on guitar, and Dannis on drums and percussion. Before settling on the name that would define and complicate their career, the brothers played together under a different banner entirely.
David Hackney encouraged his brothers to make the switch from funk, via their earlier band RockFire Funk Express, and to change the name of the group after their father died in an accident. That loss shaped more than just their sound. It gave David, the oldest and most restless of the three, a reason to chase something bigger than the soul and funk covers they’d been playing around…
