Let’s be honest about the headline: nobody has measured exactly how many people have finished a specific list of ten books. The “90%” is a playful benchmark, not a statistic. Still, the idea has a real basis. Surveys keep showing that a large share of adults read few books, or none, in a given year.
Pew Research Center’s 2021 survey found that about three quarters of American adults said they had read at least one book in the previous twelve months. That leaves roughly a quarter who hadn’t. The ten books below are long, famous, or demanding enough that finishing all of them says something about your stamina and curiosity.
1. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

Tolstoy’s novel was first published in serial form in the 1860s. It follows several Russian families through the Napoleonic wars. Most editions run well over a thousand pages, and that length alone makes it a common “did you finish it?” test.
The book is also a demanding read because of its large cast and its digressions on history. Readers often say the effort pays off. Finishing it is a dependable sign of patience.
2. Ulysses by James Joyce

Ulysses appeared in 1922 and follows a single day in Dublin, June 16, 1904. It’s known for its stream of consciousness and its shifts in style from chapter to chapter. Its structure loosely parallels Homer’s Odyssey.
