So often this season, the hectic schedule, injuries and the resultant fatigue has made it tough for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle to reach their best levels.
However, it seems a few of those factors will finally be in our favour ahead of our FA Cup trip to Fulham later this month.
The Cottagers play three times between now and our fourth round tie, while Newcastle play just once. Marco Silva’s side face a trip to Liverpool tonight in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, travel to Chelsea on Saturday and play the return leg against Jurgen Klopp’s Reds next Wednesday.
After Man City come to town on Saturday, we have a two-week break, giving us a chance to get players back from injury, resume a regular training schedule and focus fully on the FA Cup. The Athletic report that Callum Wilson’s calf injury is not serious and that Harvey Barnes will be back after next weekend’s winter break, meaning both could be back for Fulham.
As for the schedule, some will argue that games give a chance to build momentum, but the volume of fixtures and fatigue it has created over the past few months has taken its toll. We saw the benefit of a break at Sunderland and I think we’ll see that again at Fulham.
