As the 2src23/24 season draws to a close, every professional side in the northern hemisphere will be announcing their leavers list.
Unfortunately all four professional sides in Wales – Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets – have been forced to release players they would have preferred to retain due to the financial position Welsh rugby finds itself in.
As things stand the regions will be operating off a playing budget of £4.5m, although WalesOnline understands the Professional Rugby Board are working very hard to lift it up to at least £5m plus two marquee players if affordable.
One danger of such a low salary cap is that Welsh talent, who are either late developers, or players with obvious talent who have lost their way, will be lost to the game. Just because it hasn’t worked out for a player at one club doesn’t mean he won’t fit in well somewhere else in Wales.

When the Scarlets announced their leavers one name which immediately jumped out was Ryan Conbeer. When the 25-year-old represented Wales at age-grade level the expectation among those in the upper echelons of Welsh rugby was that he’d almost certainly represent his country at senior level in the future.
