National Teacher Appreciation Week arrived on Monday, May 4, and runs through Friday, May 8, offering educators a timely boost amid financial pressures. A recent Gallup survey found that 21% of K-12 teachers reported difficulty getting by on their salaries, with nearly half of those holding second jobs unrelated to education.[1][2] Restaurants and retailers responded with free items, percentage-offs, and giveaways to honor their contributions.
Restaurant Chains Deliver Freebies and Savings
Major fast-casual and quick-service spots launched promotions starting this week. Teachers simply need to show a valid school ID at checkout for most in-store offers, while some require app sign-ups or promo codes.
Chipotle kicked off its annual giveaway, allowing teachers to enter online for a chance at one of 100,000 free entree e-gift cards through May 12.[1] Whataburger provided free breakfast entrees like a Breakfast on a Bun on May 7 from 5 to 9 a.m. local time.[2]
- Einstein Bros. Bagels offered a free Bagel & Shmear with any purchase on May 6 at participating locations.[1]
- McAlister’s Deli gave complimentary sweet or unsweet tea daily from May 4 to 8, no purchase required.[2]
- Shake Shack handed out a free ShackBurger or Veggie Shack (up to $8.29 value) with a $10 minimum purchase through May 12, in-store only.[3]
