Every big film has a story that never makes it into the trailer. Sometimes it’s a budget overrun, sometimes it’s a feud between stars, and sometimes the person who leaves the production isn’t an actor at all. It’s the director, the one person supposedly steering the whole ship, who suddenly steps away before the cameras stop rolling.
These departures rarely get a clean explanation at the time. Studios reach for the phrase “creative differences” the way a doctor reaches for a chart, vague enough to cover almost anything. Few production collapses are as strange as what happened to Richard Stanley on the 1996 adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Moreau was director Richard Stanley’s passion project, but New Line fired him after just three days of shooting, blaming him for not being able to control Val Kilmer and for the production running behind. He had spent years developing the script and had originally wanted Bruce Willis for the lead role.
